Our Story: A Bit of an Obsession

We are a small family company with a serious soft spot for House Martins, Swallows, and Swifts.
Growing up, House Martins used to nest above my bedroom window, and I loved waking up to their chatter. About five years ago, a pair finally chose our house, and I spent hours watching them build. But then, disaster struck. Both nests collapsed, and we lost all eight chicks. I was devastated.

Getting it Right
I tried to help the following year by putting up some shop-bought nest cups. I was hopeful, but it didn’t go to plan. Sparrows moved in first and aggressively fought off the Martins when they returned.
I started digging into how to stop this and discovered—thanks to House Martin Conservation UK and Ireland and Paul Stevens—that the entrance size is everything. If it’s 2cm or under, the House Martins can get in, but the sparrows can’t.

3D Printing and “Mud Blobs”
That discovery started a five-year mission. Much to the amusement (and occasional dismay) of my family, I spent my time moulding and 3D printing, trying to get the perfect design.
I was determined that these shouldn’t look like the mass-produced cups. I wanted them to look like the real thing—natural, with the all important characteristic “mud blobs.”

What We Do Today
The nest cups we sell today are the result of all that tinkering. They are designed to be sparrow-proof and sturdy, giving the Martins a solid start when they arrive back from their long journey.

Hand crafted to be so natural they just know they’re home
